Development

It is planned to extend the runway to 2,200 metres (7,200 ft) to allow jetliners such as the Airbus A320, Boeing 737 and Bombardier CRJ to operate flights directly from the capital Jakarta. The expansion plan also calls for a new 3,500 square metres (38,000 sq ft) passenger terminal building and a larger apron. In 2015, the runway extension has begun and the pavement will be enhanced to Pavement Classification Number (PCN) 21 from previously PCN 16.

Banyuwangi Airport is now officially managed by PT Angkasa Pura II (Persero), after being handed over by the Ministry of Transportation on 22 December 2017. The handover was signed by Directorate General of Air Transportation Agus Santoso and President Director of Angkasa Pura II, Muhammad Awaluddin. Angkasa Pura II has prepared a budget of Rp 300 billion to add facilities and infrastructure in Banyuwangi Airport. Angkasa Pura II expands the 18,000 square meter apron to accommodate more planes. Currently, the apron area is only 3,000 square meters. The expansion of the apron is targeted for completion in July 2018, as Banyuwangi Airport in Banyuwangi will be used as a buffer airport for I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport in Bali at IMF-World Bank Annual Meeting held in October 2018 and will be attended by 17,000 people. With an apron of 18,000 square meters, Banyuwangi Airport can accommodate seven 737 series aircraft. It will also do the overlay of the runway, and add PCN (Pavement Classification Number) to 50-51.
